The problem with Lampard is/was all he does is to try and get the ball over the line (usually from about 30 yards out) while his job in the team is to provide the strikers with opportunities RED DEVIL

Lampard is not a sparkling ball player and never was, but he is sound, reliable, passes well ( often brilliantly) and makes few errors. He also scores goals from midfield, lots of them.....more than most EPL strikers.....and was one of the few English players to find anything close to his club form in the WC, a suggestion backed up by some of the newspaper hacks who rated him at the top of the bunch along with A Cole and the keeper. He "scored" against Germany, had a free kick which hit the bar and forced three saves from their keeper, one very lucky. This is more than any of our supposed front men managed added together. The leader of our leaderless side, Gerrard did his now customary headless chicken act and provided a lot of huff and puff plus three dribbled wide long range shots, whilst Rooney provided nothing, and Terry and most of the others were pretty poor. They all play without a system because they have never been given one, at least, not one which seems to go further than theoretical number patterns. Gerrard wanders wherever he thinks fit in the expectation that a rare ' Roy of The Rovers' moment will do the job as if he was still trying to do it all, like he has had to at Liverpool. Rooney seemed to be too uptight to play to his best but got very little help from wide players who performed below club level. Attacking midfielders need options, good attacking options from men who take up good positions. They also, for most of the time, have to be confident of their defence. Given the support which Lampard found in front and behind him, I think that he had a WC as good we should expect, certainly better than most of the others LC |
