They have silly long contracts - why do >Liverpool players seemingly have to declare their loyalty at every >transfer window, Because then we have a situation like we have now, with two players who (in my opinion) have only stayed because either nobody else wanted/could afford them, or certain "conditions" were met by Liverpool to ensure that they stayed. That's only my opinion, and I'll repeat that i'm not having a go at them, it's pretty standard procedure for most players. Ashley Cole is having the same stuff written about him too. You have to ask why, when the first sign of gossip starts, a player doesn't immediately jump on it. It's not difficult to tell your agent during your regular contact, to pass on a public statement of commitment on your behalf. It doesn't do a player any good to have stories linking him to other clubs for weeks, while he refuses to comment. I think Torres and Gerrard both explored other options (Gerrard's got form for it after all), both demanded assurances over investment and ownership, and only then did they decide that Liverpool was the only club in the world that they wanted to play for. But I'm cynical like that.

Not really, because they've both said in the last couple of weeks, something which they could have said at the end of last season. What's changed between then and now? I'm sure we all expected the transfer speculation, they could have silenced all of that with one brief statement. I just hope they haven't both done a Mascherano and agreed, reluctantly, to give it "one more season".

Torres and Gerrard are two different people. How many more times ? Anyway, at the end of last season both Torres and Gerrard were concentrating on the forthcoming World Cup. That's what they were focussed on. > What's changed between > then and now? I'm sure we all expected the transfer speculation, they could > have silenced all of that with one brief statement. Exactly the opposite. As with the manager quote above, the press always work on the assumption that there's no smoke without fire. So why go out of your way to deny something - that they're open to offers - which might not even be true ? > > I just hope they haven't both done a Mascherano and agreed, reluctantly, to > give it "one more season". > Why ? Don't you expect Liverpool to do very well this year then ? Because clearly if Liverpool do well, then all these assumptions of yours can never come to fruition. That almost sounds as if you want Liverpool to fall to pieces, simply so that you can be proved correct. michael adams ....

It would have saved a lot of speculation, > and stopped people assuming that both of them were listening to other > offers! Dead right! Just what I was about to say. It is amazing how fans waiver between the need to see their stars as saints or sinners, a quality decided by whether they stay or go. Liverpool FC obviously came second in Torres' thinking. His decision to stay is not for the love of the club before anything else, otherwise he could have stopped all speculation weeks ago. Seems the new managers flying visit, plus the new ownership have swung the outcome. The media speculation was created by his silence, not by some anti Pool media bias. The same thing happened when badge kissing Terry was deciding on his financial future at Man City for several weeks. Would Torres ( and possibly SG ? ) still be at L'pool if there was no sign of new owners and fresh cash input? Their long silence makes it very doubtful. Loyalty with conditions is not much of a loyalty after a man has signed a contract which has years to run. It becomes far more a matter of how well can the club do for me in the near future, rather than how much I can do for the club. Maybe this is the correct and only approach for the players who only have a short career at the top, but what is a bit sickening is this sort of loyalty garbage printed above after deciding to stay. " I never thought about leaving for one moment"...............lol...........no, of course you didn't mate. LC
