Indeed and soccer was quite common in usage. Rugby union is often
called football by those who play the game and its full title is rugby
football. The term soccer helped to distinguish between the two, years
ago.

Uruguay were poor in the midfield but defended well. To be honest I
think they set out to play defensively and settle for the draw in the
hope that they can pick up the points against the other teams in the
group.
