Promising the same piece of land to loads of different people must have seemed like a good idea at the time. Also it held up a shining beacon of democracy for the middle-east when the CIA with help from BP and the British secret services had the democratically elected government of Mohammad Mossadeq in Iran replaced by the shah and his secret police.
