Of course there will be some notable exceptions especially among goalkeepers and defenders, but I though it might be interesting if people talked about the best team their nation could put forward, consisting of players born in 1981 or later, and preferably already capped at the senior level." -- Cheers milivella

Here is what I predicted for Italy: =========================================================================== Agliardi (1983) Bonera* (1981) Barzagli** (1981) Moretti (1981) Chiellini* (1984) Aquilani* (1984) De Rossi** (1983) Donadel (1983) Rosina (1984) Gilardino** (1982) R. Bianchi (1982) Other possibilities: GK: Curci (1985) DF: Bovo (1983), Canini (1985) MF: Palombo (1981), Sammarco (1983), Foggia (1983), Montolivo (1985) FW: Cassano* (1982), Pazzini (1984), Caracciolo (1981), Palladino (1984) =========================================================================== 22 players named overall. Here's the breakdown: On Italy's 30-man roster: 6 (Chiellini (wrong position), De Rossi, Gilardino, Montolivo, Palombo, Pazzini,) Serie A (or equivalent) players: 12 (Bonera, Barzagli, Moretti, Aquilani, Donadel, Curci, Bovo, Canini, Sammarco, Foggia, Cassano, Palladino, Rosina). Some of these collected a few caps, but noone really managed to establish himself on the NT. Aquilani probably came closest, but his constant injuries hurt him. Cassano should have been the star of the team if he hadn't been Cassano. Serie B: Agliardi, Bianchi, Caracciolo Dropped off the radar The midfield seems to be the one most lacking in talent. Goalkeepers and defense look OK, even though I expect Buffon to still be around in 2006. Also missing is a truly outstanding number 10 in the class of Totti, Del Piero or Baggio. Potentially Cassano, but I don't have high hopes of him ever fulfilling his potential.

I would have overlooked people like Palombo, Montolivo and Pazzini for sure. > Cassano should have been > the star of the team if he hadn't been Cassano. I'd say "if Lippi hadn't be Lippi"! > The midfield seems to be the one most lacking in talent. Goalkeepers > and > defense look OK, even though I expect Buffon to still be around in > 2006. Indeed Lippi didn't care of MH's premise (most of the starters will be born after 1981 or so): he could end up playing 9 over-29 WC2006 veterans! (the 32 year old Di Natale instead of one of them wouldn't change that much...) So having Chiellini and De Rossi in your XI is enough for you to have a perfect prediction! -- Cheers milivella
