Agreed that Rooney was not one of the 20 best forwards in the WC.

I agree even more that Ronaldo made him a great player. So much so
that in the previous season without Ronaldo he scored more goals than
he did in the prior two seasons combined. Of course he was 4 short of
the prior two seasons combined total when you consider all tournaments.
I think it must be because Ronaldo left.

I don't think that's all of it, but even so, why then was he selected?
How many injured players did England select? Was it to have an excuse
when they went out?

He was selected because England had no one else in his class to turn
to. I'm not saying that was a good idea
