There seems to be a general thought amongst the English media and fans
that if they simply play up to their potential, England will win the
World Cup. Having watched every team in the World Cup multiple times by
now, I can safely say that such notions are hopeful but unrealistic.
There are teams in this tournament that will absolutely hammer England
if both teams play to their full strengths.

It is a seductive notion to believe that because many of the England
squad perform quite well in the Premier League that they are naturally
world-class players, but such an argument doesn't hold water. If the
team really was loaded with such talent, then surely some of it would
have been tempted away from the Premier League to the various big money
clubs around Europe. That's not definitive proof that none of them are
good enough, mind you, but it is an interesting point. In any case, any
player of above average talent is going to look great against the bottom
10 of the English Premier League year-on-year. That doesn't make such
players world-class, it makes them top of the English class.
