Anelka, playing mostly in midfield, was France's second best player and had a good game. All of the defenders plus Lassana Diarra had shaky moments and gave the ball away cheaply several times. Alou Diarra and Toulalan makes more sense to me than Lassana, but Toulalan was injured. Gignac missed several sitters. I don't think he is good enough for this level. Bring on Remy ! Although France were clearly the better side, they were a bit lucky to get away with a clean sheet and no yellow cards to players already carrying one. Ireland had a few very good chances (Lawrence, Whelan) that they really ought to have put away. I wasn't convinced Keane had handled (in a very dangerous attacking move) at all, and certainly not yellow card level, whereas right before that it appeared a French defender had handled. TV5 commentary is a laugh. Quite biased, but in a way touching - these guys are more fans than commentators. > > FT: Ireland - France 0-1 > > No way Ireland can get a result in Paris. > >

I really don't know what his instructions were, but he ended up wide right a fair bit of the time. Also quite deep in the centre of the park, and occasionally popping up in the left. Cut in frequently to provide good passes, shots etc. More effective playmaker than Gourcuff, who was well off his usual game. He really played very well - I thought so, and so did the commentators. I even saw him smile once. (and this was a while before the goal) Malouda on the bench, Ribery out, France did not have much in the way of width except the Fullbacks, and Evra rarely got forward except once to dive blatantly in the Penalty area; Sagna was a bit more adventurous without achieving much.

Or was it : A double favor to a football developing country ? A nice gesture to curb alcoholism ? A good deed to give you a chance to kiss a girl... And what have you done with it? Now you even need a new coach... |
