It's not my rule, it's how a superstar is defined. I believe it's more
to do with marketing power than current exploits (e.g. Beckham), in
which case you definitely have to play at an elite team. Villa is
definitely an exception (though Valencia was in the elite group not
too long ago).

Well, he did say be a "key player"...

But I agree with you - limiting the definition of a superstar to those
playing for only the top clubs in Europe does seem to be bit, well,
limiting...

Not very much. Superstars get paid huge amounts of money, which means almost
of them play for a wealthy european club (even if indebted).

Villa will be playing for Barcelona after the cup. Ozil will not be a
Werder player 12 months from now. Forlan did play for Man Utd for a
while, but was never more than just ok.
