Always. Yes, if it is clearly a deliberate handball. My problem is the grey areas - surely nobody equates Kewell's red card with Surez's ? > > However, a generally better solution would be to just call it a goal and > give a yellow to the handballer - I just can't see that being > implemented. I can't either - the rules are written in such a way that assuming a goal is impossible (eg. if it hits the referee, or the ball is destroyed by an outside force etc.). > > Ciao, > SM

Football has laws and breaking each law has its own consequences. Suarez will get a one or two game suspension, which is the prescribed consequence. Players take gambles when they commit fouls through the game, and this is no different. He traded in a certain defeat for a red card, a one or two game suspension, on an approximate 30% bet that Ghana would miss the PK. -- HASM

It's bad enough that some goals are not counted despite the ball having crossed the line. The last thing I want for football is goals being counted without the ball having crossed the line. Maybe, but then suspensions awarded to worse offenses (such as violent fouls) would have to be escalated as well. Fine by me, as long as the criteria are clear. > It's simply not right that Ghana lost because of that. Actually, Ghana lost because Gyan failed to convert the ensuing penalty, and because a couple of other players also missed their shots during the shootout. > Having said that I think Diego Forlan is one of the players of the > tournament and I have imense respect for his work ethic and I'm > pleased to see him continue in the tournament. Agreed. Abrao, Luiz Mello

Either it's deliberate or it isn't. The ref is the judge of it. Kewell's was deliberate, even though he thinks it wasn't, so it was a red card. |
