Arsenal as a result of being in the top three gained automatic qualification to the group stage of the UCL 2010-11 season, while Spurs gained automatic entry to the 3rd qualifying round by virtue of finishing 4th. It works in accordance to the countries UEFA co-efficient ranking, which for England has improved over the past few seasons!!! England Chelsea - Group stage (Champions) Man Utd - Group stage (Runner-up) Arsenal - Group stage (3rd, co-efficient bonus) Spurs - 3rd round qualifying (4th, co-efficient bonus, plus four matchday byes, 1st round x 2, and 2nd round x 2)

Indeed. UEFA changed the qualification system (with different paths for "champions" and "non-champions") last year. One of the consequences of this change is that the 3rd ranked team of the 3 best ranked leagues don't need to go through the qualifiers anymore.
