Depending on opponents:

Bench one or both of them (depending on how well Barry recovers)

Or play a five man midfield with Rooney alone up front (particularly
against stronger teams)

eg. Rooney

Gerrard

Walcott Lampard Carrick Lennon

Cole Ferdinand King Johnson

?

You're seriously suggesting Capello plays the most potent attacking
midfielder on the planet... as a defensive midfielder?

Seems like the most reasonable lineup to me. It may even make sense to
bench Lampard and go with a more defensive-minded CM.

But Capello really likes the big tall target man, so I guess we'll be
treated to Crouch and Heskey (ugh!).

If he were playing both of them at the same time, yes. I assumed
that's what the original poster was suggesting. Would you then have
that creampuff Gerrard play more of a DMFish role?

And reconsider what I said. "Play them as CMF'S". I never said have
Frank as a DM. Jeeeesh.

No, I wouldn't have Gerard in the team at all. He regularly goes
missing at international level. But if I were forced to play both,
I'd rather have an already-ineffective Gerard as the more defensively
minded of the two than waste Lampard's goal threat.

I think you'll find that pretty much what you said: "Lampard carrying
a DMFish role". Hence my incredulity.
