I think it has to be viewed as that the Americans lack the toughness,
urgency, and the play-with-a-gun-to-your-head mentality that most
other countries bring to the Cup.

The United States will never win the World Cup because the sun will
come out tomorrow for the US team -- not so for most of the other
losers.

Is there a country in the last 16 where soccer is not THE sporting
life-and-death lifeblood of the nation?

Maybe Japan, but I can't think of too many others.

I'll be interested to see how Uruguay responds to being roughed up. I
think Ghana wins this quarter now.

They can't.

To step up to the next level, the United States (as a NATION, not a
soccer federation) would have to literally make soccer the life-and-
death nature that most of the remaining 16 countries in this
tournament do.

Players from nations where soccer is the be and end-all of their
sporting culture have that seventh or eighth gear because they have
to.

The USA will always be that precocious little kid who's cute, but
never will really amount to much -- because they won't literally be
killed or ostracized if they lose...

Imagine the difference of playing in places like the MLS or lower EPL
vs. where you can get killed with a flare if you're the wrong
goaltender.

Take a look at the four draws -- you'd almost, then, have to conclude
that the USA was the weakest of all 16 teams, at that point.

Nice to see some humour after a crushing defeat.
