From: Jesus Petry on 10 Mar 2010 10:08 ********************************************* Group phase (1st placed and six best 2nd placed qualify): Tue, Mar 9 Group 3 Bolívar (La Paz-BOL) 0-0 Estudiantes (La Plata-ARG) First point for Bolívar who need a miracle to qualify. Estudiantes will hope Alianza Lima don't get a win in the Peruvian match-ups against Juan Aurich if they want to top the group. Group 1 Racing Montevideo (URU) 2-1 Cerro Porteño (Asunción-PAR) [Matías Mirabaje 19', Martín Cauteruccio 69' - Luis Enrique Cáceres 84'] Mirabaje was left free on the edge of the box to receive a pass from a free kick, his shot apparently took a slight deflection before going into the bottom corner. A very high cross into the box eluded Barreto and Cauteruccio, standing behind him, touched towards goal. A defender tried a goal line clearance but could only put the ball in off the bar, although it seemed to be past the line anyway. The ball bounced over a Racing defender when Cerro were already down to ten men and Cáceres fired in a consolation goal into the near corner. Racing climb to second and Cerro may end the round alone at the bottom of the group. Group 8 Univ. Católica (Santiago-CHL) 2-2 Univ. de Chile (Santiago-CHL) [played in Coquimbo; Matías Rubio 21', Francisco Silva 70' - JM Olivera 19', Edson Puch 90+2'] La Católica's defenders were apparently unaware there was a corner kick being taken against their team, it was taken short and quick, as defenders scrambled to position, Fuentes tried a headed clearance but hit the ball against Olivera's CHEST, and it went in. Católica responded fast, Rubio awkwardly controlled a nice long ball but had time to poise himself and slot under Conde. La U's 'keeper would later provide us the howler of the season, letting Silva's speculative long drive slip under his legs and slowly into the goal. Puch saved his blushes with a late header from a corner kick. La U take a provisional lead with four points, Católica get their first point. Group 6 Deportivo Cuenca (ECU) 2-0 Monarcas Morelia (MEX) [Gabriel Méndez 59', Luis Miguel Escalada 83'] Méndez got the ball near the center circle, advanced a few steps and sent a rocket in off the bar. Escalada received from Méndez and brilliantly shot first time low into the near corner. Cuenca revive their hopes in the competition with their first three points; Morelia, with only one, are almost out of contention. Wed, Mar 10 Group 2 Once Caldas (Manizales-COL) - CF Monterrey (MEX) [10:30 PM GMT] OC lead the group with six points, Monterrey are third with three. It's their first encounter. Group 6 Nacional (Montevideo-URU) - CA Banfield (ARG) [10:30 PM GMT] Banfield lead with six points, Nacional are second with four. They meet for the first time. Group 1 Independiente Medellín (COL) - Corinthians (São Paulo-BRA) [in Bogotá; Mar 11 12:50 AM GMT] Medellín got an away draw to Cerro Porteño in the first round. Corinthians won at home against Racing Montevideo. This is their first encounter. Group 3 Alianza Lima (PER) - Juan Aurich (Chiclayo-PER) [Mar 11 12:50 AM GMT] Alianza lead with six points, Aurich are third with three. This is their first international match-up. Last year in the Peruvian league: Feb 28, Lima: 1-1. Jun 20, Chiclayo: Alianza 2-1. Sep 27, Lima: Alianza 1-0. Nov 14, Chiclayo: Aurich 2-1. Group 8 Caracas FC (VEN) - Flamengo (Rio de Janeiro-BRA) [Mar 11 12:50 AM GMT] Caracas lost away to Universidad de Chile, Flamengo beat Universidad Católica in the first round. It's their first meeting. Tchau! Jesus Petry
