Uruguay - Netherlands will be the rematch of a seminal WC match, the one
played the 15th June 1974 in Hanover.

Arguably the very first time modern football was displayed at such level in
international competition in such a complete way, the Dutch, albeit in a
very rough form, showed the world what in the next 20 years would become the
dominant characteristics of football: zonal defense, offside trap, pressing,
short depth, forward defending, they had it all.

The Uruguayans, who had started the match as heavy favorites, didn't know
what had hit them, it was like a match played by 2 teams in different eras,
it ended 2-0 for the Dutch, but could have ended up 10-0 as easily, the
Dutch did possibly set the recond for squandered chances in a single match
as well ...

Not the finest display of what would become famous as total football, but
probably the very birthday of modern football, at least at international
finals competitions.

Technical detail: It was a group 3 match. Uruguay didn't advance and
there was no semifinal as such in WC 74.

Nothing to say about the rest of your post because I didn't see the
match, but I imagined you are right.

For a while I didn't understand your post, then I grokked it! :)

There have been seminal semifinals, but not all the seminal matches are
semifinals :p

Sorry. My mistake for speed reading.

Which reminds me a of the guy who read Leon Tolstoy's "War and Peace"
in 15 minutes, after taking the course on speed reading.

A friend asked him:

- What it is all about?

-Uhhh... you know,... something about Russia.
