At 1:10 looks like the defender slightly touches the ball.

I might be wrong, though.

I thought so as well and was going to post here. But, I rewound and
watched the foul a few times on my TV after the game ended.

If you see the replay from the goal line, it does look like the
Mensah gets the ball, but on the close up view you can see that
actually the ball is already ahead of his foot (same line, but closer
to the viewer). So, it appears that he touched the ball, but he missed
it completely.

Boateng's grasscutter was the more stoppable of the two. It was
Howard's near post, it's always difficult getting down that quickly,
but he could have stopped it. Gyan's was the kind you have to stop
with your face. Awesome goals, both of them.

I thought so too, but the canera angle which appears to show the Ghana
player gets the ball has to be watched again (ESPN showed it in the
standard high resolution)... the defender actually does miss the ball.

The situation leading up to them was the key. A giveaway while going
forward exposes you 1-1... and on the first goal Howard was out of
position... sort of like the first goal in the Man U - Bayern second leg
this season. The guy just marched in and took a shot without hindrance,
and the goalie was 1 or 2 steps falsely positioned.
