It was 2-3... If Spain had drawn that one, they'd eventually have
advanced instead of Nigeria, all else held equal (I know it doesn't
work like that, though - but it gives an idea on how costly a gk
blunder can be in a tight group)

Zubizarreta also conceded a comical one vs Northern Ireland in 1986.
There's also Joel Bats in that WC's semi, Pat Bonner vs. the Dutch in
'94, David Seaman and Oliver Kahn vs Brasil in '02. And someone also
noted that Valdir Peres made a similarly horrible blunder, in the 1982
opener against the USSR.

So maybe Green makes the top five :-) Certainly looks like the worst
WC blunder by an English keeper.

Yes, but please don't be such a pedant. I know very well the end result
was 3-2 but the 3-2 was scored on that cracker by Oliseh everyone
remembers. Before that, Spain was up 2-1 and Zubizarreta let in the 2-1
on a mis hit cross practically from the end line that rolled up to him
but then he fumbled it in. I don't recall if it was credited to an own
goal or ws it given to the guy who hit the cross.

But... no error and no 3-2 from Oliseh. Spain were much better right
up to that error. I think it was the 2-1 which Raul scored on that long
forward pass right at the beginning of the second half, but am not sure.

Both goals made the all-WC highlights. The patzer by Zubizarreta didn't *g*

In the Finals. The howlers they've done in qualifying are worse. For
me the stupidest was the air kick in Coratia. It is hard to imagine
what goes through the goalie's mind when he nonchalantly swipes at the
ball but doesn't have the care to get his body behind it. Even ignorant
baseball players know all about that. :-)

For me the worst goalie error of all time is Arconada's from the 1984
Euro. Of course 1984 was my first Euro and 82 my first Cup, so I don't
know what went before.

I agree he is a donkey, but he is also the donkey that laid that ball
off perfectly for Gerrard to score. Missing his breakaway in the second
half, though, was unforgivable.

Everyone misses, missing is not unforgivable, it's the gutless way he
was with the chance. No composure, no craft, he panicked, period.
