From: Raja, The Great on 12 Jul 2010 16:19 Most of the "most boring World Cup ever" claims have started since the 1990 World Cup. Every world cup starting 1990 has been deemed boring. So lets start with 1990. I also started watching World Cup since then (I was too young in 1986, barely remember the final). 8 nations have won the World Cup. How many did these 8 score in the last 6 world cup during regular play (penalty shoot out goals not counted)? Countries Goals Total Matches Goals per match Uruguay 2+0+0+4+0+11 4+0+0+3+0+7 17/14 = 1.21 Italy 10+8+8+5+12+4 7+7+5+4+7+3 47/33 = 1.42 Germany 15+9+8+14+14+16 7+5+5+7+7+7 76/38 = 2.00 Brazil 4+11+14+18+10+9 4+7+7+7+5+5 66/35 = 1.88 England 8+0+7+6+6+3 7+0+4+5+5+4 30/25 = 1.20 Argentina 5+8+10+2+11+10 7+4+5+3+5+5 51/29 = 1.75 France 0+0+15+0+7+1 0+0+7+3+7+3 23/20 = 1.15 Spain 6+10+8+10+9+8 4+5+3+5+4+7 51/28 = 1.82 Germany is by far the least boring side. The have scored 2 goals per match since 1990. Brazil/Spain/Argentina are quite close enough. Italy/ Uruguay/England/France have been very boring. France have been quite awful really. Germany scored 15 goals for 1990 Brazil scored 11 goals for 1994 France scored 15 goals for 1998 Brazil scored 18 goals for 2002 Italy scored 12 goals for 2006 Spain scored only 8 goals for 2010

I don't know why there is this "German=boring" chlichee, ok, they were quite bad in 2002, but in 2006 and 2010 and lot of WCs before, they just weren't boring at all.

They weren't a great team, but not boring. I think they were probably the most boring in 1998 (only 8 goals). The team was really old and struggling to score against even ordinary teams and went out crashing in a very bad way to Croatia. In 1994, I thought they weren't as bad but they had a shocker against Bulgaria. They always seem to be in trouble against Croatia/Serbia/ Bulgaria etc. Slavic nations that are not Russia bother them :-)

The 3-0 for Germany at EC96 was a joke because Russia mostly outplayed them and were much faster. Russia had some bad luck at WC2010 Qualification to meet already a German team that were on the way on the WC2010 form with Özil, Khedira and Co. Nontheless Russia had lots, I say lots of chance to goal.

They are more attacking. I think Germany does not like countering teams. Thats why they never beat Italy. |
