What's wrong with replacing a player who had a an awful game?

Looked a lot like 2006. Didn't England have a game plan during qualification?
If so, why don't they have one now?

I can't help but wonder if England don't play football like your
immune system fights bacteria. If it's a big game, against a well
known opponent, they come out well off the gate, well prepared
(immunized) and play a good game, win or lose. If it's a lesser side,
they have no idea how to play, no memory cells to built on.

Permanently affecting the career of a guy who made one mistake (putting
him at the low end of the Mistakes Table for that match for England) to
placate the fans and media is a serious violation of trust. He's either
your number one or he's not... and if he is, you stick by him through
one error, at least.
