If Argentina had Javier Zanetti listed in their squad as a midfielder, FIFA wouldn't stop him playing as a defender would they? GK can use their hands. Anyway, like I said, GK is recognized as a special position that get special dispensation if you don't have enough cover. If your star striker got injured -- you are out of luck. If you lose your Goalie, you can fly in a replacement.
