Twente: 29 games, 74 points, +33 goal differential
Ajax: 29 games, 70 points, +69 goal differential

Your task is to find other instances where a team's goal differential
was more than a goal a game better than a team ahead of them. A few
weeks ago Bury was ahead of Notts County in England's League Two in a
similar situation, but IIRC Notts Co had matches in hand.

Turkey
---------
Bursapor 58
Besiktas 55
Fenerbahce 55
Galatasaray 53
Trabzonspor 46

According to RSSSF, no one besides Besiktas, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray,
and Trabzonspor has ever won the Turkish league.

That's an astounding difference.

If I had the time to start looking I'd probably try to think of
situations in which perennial powerhouses finished second to one-off
upstarts.

Some other interesting questions:

What was the lowest-finishing team in a major league to finish first
in GD?

What was the lowest-finishing team to finish with a positive GD?

What was the highest-finishing team to finish with a negative GD?

Don't count your chickens in this one. Last year Sivasspor were also in
first place about this time, but eventually got pipped at the post.
Strangely, they are fighting relegation this year, so dunno what
happened to them - maybe Real Mardin knows.

I hear Basidiospor and Ascospor are in line for promotion.
