Semi final: Atletico Madrid - Liverpool; Fulham - HSV

Another performance by Liverpool that was both ridiculous and sublime.
Benfica started great, running circles around Liverpool -- who was
barely organized at times, resulting in multiple desperate clearing
attempts and hopeful lobs that went straight to the opposition.
Benfica gradually ran out of steam. Liverpool settled down, then went
ahead on from a corner. Kuyt planted himself in the 6-yard box and
headed in the opener. No goal -- the lineman waved his flag --
OFFSIDE! Benitez went apoplectic "How can he be offside from a
corner?" Kuyt also demanded an explanation. The ref then decided the
goal was good and Benfica were furious. I'm sure the lineman had his
earful of "you don't know what you are doing" chants for the rest of
the match -- though to be fair, he might have thought that someone
else touched the ball in that play. Gerrard then set up Lucas for an
one on one, he feigned one way then went the other to go by his
compatriot and put Liverpool up 2-0. Great play. Lucas may be as
useless as dog hair in the summer on many occasions, but once in a
while he shows his quality.

Benfica lost heart in the second half and were mostly second best.
Benfica had a freekick, Liverpool cleared. The ball fell to Benayoun
who quickly dash forward. He ignored Torres on his left, skewed a pass
to Kuyt who was full steam down the right side line. Cross. Tap-in.
Goal. 3-0 Torres. Benfica's players began trying to get back into the
match individually. Their plays fragmented, their passing half-
hearted. Easy cruise for Liverpool, right? Wrong. Cardozo drilled a
free-kick into the hole left vacant by a Benfica player and into the
net. Suddenly Benfica had a way out. Not long after, Benfica had
another free kick in almost the same position -- the sight of Ramirez
desperately hopped himself into the box after being fouled by Benayoun
before falling over was almost funny. Same gimmick as the last time?
No, Cardozo lifted his kick over the wall but Kyrgiakos deflected it
out. Then Torres settled the tie lobbing sublimely over Julio Cesar
from a through ball by Kuyt (?).

Good: Kuyt's harrying style, Torres' finishing, Benfica's opening
minutes, Di Maria's run.
Bad: Liverpool's corner defending, Liverpool's ball protection early
in the first half, Cardozo's diving.
Other 1: Argentines apparently know each other very well and obliged
one another. At one time or another Aimar, Di Maria, and Mascherano
fouled one another without much of a touch.
Other 2: DAgger is a terrible leftback but you can't help but love
him. He tried all the tricks -- feigned left, feigned right,
dribbling, back heel, and at one time popped up on the right side of
the opposition's box.

Do you think a UEFA cup win would be enough to keep Benitez's job? How
about that plus squeaking into 4th place (which seems a tall order right
now).

Dont know about H&G, but I'm sure many fans would be gaga-eyed about
him again.

I don't know. Failure to qualify for UCL may be too big a blow. On the
other hand, the club may not have the money to fire him and rebuild.
And then again, Juve may come calling, and he'll bolt before it gets
too poisonous.

Gaga-eyed? Probably not, though many more would think that he deserves
more time with a trophy.
