: thanks for the laugh ;-)

You'll wait 60 years for your first chance at revenge in a World Cup
just like the English did :-)

Yes it's possible. Remember 1950 when the USA team (captained and managed by
Scots) beat England.

Yet another WC where the only Scotish representation was via a 3rd

Scotland qualified for the 1950 World Cup.

Yes, managed and captained by Scots, but the foreign influence on that
team is often quite overstated. Here is the squad with birthplaces.
There were five foreign-born players on the entire squad, but only two
on the team that played against England, Gaetjens, and McIlvenny.

USA Squad vs England 1950
Walter Bahr Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Frank Borghi St. Louis, Missouri
Charlie Colombo St. Louis, Missouri
Joe Gaetjens Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Harry Keough St Louis, Missouri
Joe Maca Massapequa, New York
Ed McIlvenny Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Gino Pariani St. Louis, Missouri
Ed Souza Fall River, Massachusetts
John Souza Fall River, Massachusetts
Frank Wallace St. Louis, Missouri

Subs
Robert Annis St Louis, Missouri
Adam Wolanin Lwow, Poland
Gino Gardassanich Fiume, Italy
Geoff Coombes Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England
Robert Craddock Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania
Nicholas DiOrio Morgan Township, Pennsylvania

Although a good player, McIlvenny's captaincy apparently was more
caprice than merit.

"Oddly enough the United States used a different captain in each of the
three games. Harry Keough, against Spain, "because he spoke Spanish",
Ed McIlvenny against England, "because he was British" and Walter
Bahr, against Chile, "because he was the real captain."
