Has there ever been a World Cup won by a team other than Brazil in which there weren't attempts from somewhere to downgrade the performance of the champion? Recall how the Italians take frequent hits on here, too. The only way to avoid being a questionable champion is to win at least two of your group matches (preferably three) and win all of the knockout matches in 90 minutes (plus added time), preferably with your opponents at full-strength and your goals coming from the run-of-play. I do agree that it must suck when you want to celebrate and you have to deal with annoying, sometimes cynical, other times bitter detractors. But unless you are Brazil this is inevitable. I don't think that any nation gets singled out for harsh treatment, the severity of which depends on how close their matches were and on whether or not there were questionable calls.

My pet theory is that many Italians fans thought their team performance not convincing during the final match and to justify their winning the world cup despite being dominated, they felt they had to downrate the French team performance by claiming that Malouda dived despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGAJYQ_aBx0

If you're an Asian country that gets lucky and makes the semifinals you have to put up with a double dose of it. Moreover, suppose the US had beat Germany after the handball on Frings had been a penalty. Then the US and S Korea would have met in the SF and one of them would have made the Final. Imagine the conspiracy theories then! We would have got just as much stick as the Koreans had we got past Germany with the help of such a penalty, even though I argue it should have been called and would have been perfectly legitimate. -- ciao, Bruce drift wave turbulence: http://www.rzg.mpg.de/~bds/ |
