I've computed the UCL rankings since 1999-2000. And, to reward
consistency, I have computed a mobile average.

Let me explain how it all works by the means of an example:
- In 1999-2000, Mario Jardel is the (joint) UCL top scorer: he is 1st
in this ranking.
- His team (Porto) reaches quarter-finals, so they are (joint) 5th.
- For the 1999-2000 ranking, Mario Jardel has (1+5)/2 = 3 points.
- He's 3rd in this ranking, because Raul has 1 point (less is better)
and Rivaldo 2.
- This 3rd place in the seasonal ranking becomes 3 points for the
mobile ranking.
- The mobile average is in fact the average between the seasonal
position and the previous mobile average.
- Since 1999-2000 is the first year, Jardel has, live every other
player, a fixed previous mobile average of 16 points (because I
consider only the top 15 players from the seasonal ranking).
- So in the mobile ranking, Jardel has (16+3)/2 = 9.50 points.
- In 2000-2001, he is 2nd in the scorer table, his team (Galatasaray)
is 5th, so he has 3.5 points; but 4 players has less points (Elber,
Raúl, Bowyer, Helguera), so he's 5th in the seasonal ranking. In the
mobile ranking, he'll have (9.50+5)/2 = 7.25 points.

Does it sound complex? Don't know, but it's very quick and easy to
compute. Anyway, you just need to know that to top this ranking a
player must score a lot of goals, his team must reach the final
stages, and both these conditions must be realized year after year.

Finally, the mobile ranking (top 10 players in order):

* = in FIFA World Player top 10
** = FIFA World Player of the year!
+ = in Ballon d'Or top 10
++ = Ballon d'Or!

At least for the most recent seasons, I quite like the ranking. (Just
to avoid misinterpretations: this is not due to the mobile average
producing better and better results! Only the data of the last 3 years
or so really count, so if it's a good method it should produce good
results since the 2001-02 ranking.) Your opinion?

OK, but which forwards that were in FIFA WP or BdO top 10 are missing
from my ranking? (let me skip the first two seasons, that should be
considered just as a "training" for the mobile average)

[I'm also correcting a crazy error I made in the 2002-03 season]

Quick analysis: sometimes the player enter in my next ranking. This
(while it could be partially caused by the fact that FIFA WP and BdO
are assigned after the first half of the next season) probably shows
that my rankings are too conservative.

It looks like some of them are in top positions in the mobile average
*national league* ranking (the leagues here are basically EPL, Liga
and Serie A). Take e.g. 2008-09:

> > Didier Drogba * +
> > Lionel Messi ** ++
> > Steven Gerrard * +
> > Thierry Henry
> > Cristiano Ronaldo * +
> > Wayne Rooney * +
> > Miroslav Klose

>

> Torres * (11th in my ranking)
> Ibrahimovic + (31st in my ranking)

The top 10 players in the mobile average national league rankings are:

Cristiano Ronaldo
-> Z. Ibrahimovic
S. Eto'o
D. Forlán
-> Fernando Torres
W. Rooney
A. Mutu
A. Del Piero
D. Milito
-> Kaká

Now I have to find a way to merge the two mobile average rankings!
(the Champions League one and the national league one)

I went the easy way... Picked the top 30 players from one ranking and
the top 30 from the other, gave 31st position (= 31 points) to anyone
present only in the other ranking, computed the average. Here is the
result:

After 2008-09 (in bracket the position in the FIFA World Player and
Ballon d'Or rankings)
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (2,2)
2. S. Eto'o (9,5)
3. W. Rooney (10,8)
4. L. Messi (1,1)
5. Fernando Torres (7,11)
6. Kaká (4,6)
7. S. Gerrard (8,9)
8. T. Henry (22,15)
9. A. Del Piero
10. D. Kuyt
11. D. Drogba (6,10)
12. Z. Ibrahimovic (14,7)
13. Raúl
14. D. Forlán (-,19)
15. R. van Persie
16. Miroslav Klose
16. A. Mutu
18. D. Milito
19. Lisandro López
20. D. Berbatov
21. E. Adebayor
21. Ryan Babel
21. David Villa (19,26)
24. N. Anelka
25. F. Totti
26. F. Kanouté
27. Deivid
27. S. Agüero
29. Filippo Inzaghi
29. A. Gilardino
31. C. Tévez
31. Peter Crouch
33. G. Higuaín
34. F. Morientes
34. R. van Nistelrooy
34. F. Lampard (11,21)
37. Alexandre Pato
38. J. Llorente
38. Franck Ribery (21,28)
38. Karim Benzema (-,29)
40. D. Bent
40. J. Carew
43. Andrii Shevchenko
43. E. Cavani
43. F. Miccoli
43. Robinho
48. Louis Saha

Not bad, IMHO.
