I assume he and Schweinsteiger were supposed to play in central midfield, with Marin and �zil, perhaps, in further forward and wider positions. Ballack must have been penciled in as largely defensive, given that Rolfes was not available and Frings not picked. The most viable alternative in the squad now would appear to be Khedira.
