They were never going to get far with an inept lone striker, it took 2 and three quarter matches for the coach to realise, and were lucky Germany had an off day. That said, the 4-0 hammering of Australia was the key result to everything in the group, it meant that Germany were able to have an off day and recover, whilst Australia, Serbia and Ghana couldn't afford a slip up against each other, Mini table Australia W1 D1 L0 F3 A2 +1 Ghana W1 D1 L0 F2 A1 +1 Serbia W0 D0 L2 F1 A3 -2

While it might be tempting to chalk that scoreline up to Cahill's sending off, I really think Australia just wasn't ready and sharp that day. But it helps having 11 on the field, it's an extra body to dribble past.
