From: MH on 24 May 2010 16:40 Half time and it is a bit of a massacre. 3-0 already, and Argentina looking very fluid - not even diving that much as they don't need to. Unfortunately for us, three very nice goals. Super free kick from a sharp angle from Maxi Rodriguez, (should possibly have been a penalty, initial foul outside area, but further one inside), counterattck Higuain , tackled but ball broke to tevez, perfect pass to Maxi, 2-0. Third one tremendous shot from about 22 yards with outside of left foot by De MAria. Canada B in title is only half in jest. We are missing the following regular starters: De Jong, McKenna, Jakovic, Bernier, De Guzman, Hutchinson, Hume ,Hirschfeld. And Gerba but he is useless. None of them even in the squad. First start ? for Ledgerwood. Imhoff back in the team for first time in ages. Stalteri, who missed most of the season through injury, is playing, but very badly. Argentina: Romero Jonas G Burdisso Otamendi Heinze Maxi R Pastore Mascherano De Maria Tevez Higuain Might be close to their planned lineup, maybe with Samuel and obviously with Messi added in.

I expect Samuel, Messi, De Michellis, Milito to be further up the pecking order than some of the players Maradona used today. I think he was testing the players on the cusp of the first team and who would be the obvious first names to come in off the bench, e.g. Tevez, Pastore, Burdisso, Maxi and Otamendi, and possibly Jonas at right wingback.

Final 5-0. Not too much in second half, goals by Tevez and Agero. First caps for Straith and Pacheco for Canada, and first appearance in yonks for Stephen Ademolu, now playing in Lithuania. Onstad set a new record for appearances by a Canadian GK today, but I doubt he is pleased. DeRosario, Johnson, Hainault and Onstad all returning to their teams in MLS after this one, and Simpson and Imhof also leaving the squad. The team that will face Venezuela in our next match may well be the weakest Canada has fielded in about five years.

Veron came on as a sub. So did Kun, Martin Palermo, Clemente Rodriguez, Garce and at least one other. The players who did themselves a favour today, in my view, were: Mascherano - better passing from him than we are used to seeing Maxi - two goals and good play Higuain - involved a lot, quick and decisive De Maria - Very dangerous. Tevez - strong game. The rest were forgetable against a very weak opponent. Messi was not in the squad but was one the sidelines. He took a minor knock in training.

Mascherano and Di Maria are certain starters so long as their fit. Tevez did have a strong game but I expect he'd make way for Messi in the first choice XI (nice conundrum for El Diego). Another other question is whether to have Higuin or Milito in the striker position - I guess Milito was being rested after his recent exploits in Europe, and reasonably so but Higuin is likely to be just ahead of him in the pecking order going by the qualifiers. Veron comes in so the question in midfield is whether to go for Maxi in a more staid formation that gives width on the right, or play with an advanced playmaker in the inexperienced Pastore, (or maybe even Jonas in there). It looks like Maxi made a strong case for himself but I'd like to see Pastore given another go at the next friendly (it'd be good for Argentina and good for my FS score too). The defence wasn't tested at all so hard to say anything about them. > The rest were forgetable against a very weak opponent. > > Messi was not in the squad but was one the sidelines.
