Of course, Rafael being a hothead might very well have been sent off at some point, that's true (the only true bit). But the point is, if he had managed to keep his cool and stay in the game till near the end, from what we saw most likely United would have qualified. Nothing's for sure but it's fairly likely, that's how it goes in the alternate reality. You know, like my site, that's what prompted me to write this. (I know it's meant half as a joke but he's also serious, he thinks he's telling it as it is.)

Well, if you want to play what-if? then I suggest Bastian Schweinsteiger at the beginning of the second half. Suppose he doesn't hesitate, he remembers his Euro2008 form and takes the shot as soon as he gets open. And scores. Then we don't need Rafael's sending off to "wonderfully lose" the match and win the tie. Of course, in the real world, Schweini hesitated, then tried to push the ball past one more defender, and lost it. Oh well. -- ciao, Bruce drift wave turbulence: http://www.rzg.mpg.de/~bds/

Oh well. Lame. There's mistakes and there's mistakes. You can't compere Schweini with Rafael in this respect. If you want to play what-if, play it by the rules. :-) That said, I don't want to play what-if. IMO, because of the the thinness of the United squad (which has other deeper causes), Fergusson had to use players prone to many mistakes that don't belong to this level of the UCL. So, with a bit of bad luck, they lost. I was just countering the article above.

Stupid play to do an intentional foul like that on the midfield line just because he's too lazy to run back. -- ciao, Bruce drift wave turbulence: http://www.rzg.mpg.de/~bds/ |
