Argument: The US will have a striker corps able to help it reach the
knockout stages of the next two World Cups!

Altidore will be 24, then 28, and no matter what faults critics find
(many if not most justifiable), he surely won't be worse then unless
he has serious injury.

His mates in the striker corps, Gomez, Buddle, and Findlay, weren't on
anybody's radar until roughly 17 minutes before 30 man rosters were
due. If you are of the Beersian school of US player performance
interpretation, then there is hope that some equally world-class
strikers will emerge from nowhere just before 2014's tune-up matches
begin. If you agree with most of the rest of us, then it doesn't
matter. The US found three sub-par strikers for this roster. It can
just as easily find three sub-par strikers for the next.

More optimistically, someone decent might emerge, though I don't have
a sense of who that might be. At that point, too, it might be decided
that a 31 year old Dempsey will serve best as a support striker. Given
the strength of the US midfield corps (Holden, Bradley, Torres, Clark,
Edu, Feilhaber, Rogers, and Kljestan ought ALL be in their career
primes next time around).

And then there is Charlie Davies. Even though I'm not big on him, he
is a $6.99 750 ml. bottle of $6.99 Yellowtail to Findlay's Mogen David
20-20.

The biggest concern for the US is in defense. Cherundolo, Demerit, and
Bocanegra will likely be gone and Onyewu will likely be past 30. I
don't know who waits in the wings.

There may be some depth of modest talent at fullback. At LB, Bornstein
had two decent games and isn't out of the woods yet. Heath Pearce will
be 29 and is probably just a quarter-notch below Bornstein at that
position. At RB, Spector might show some of his young promise again.
Supposedly young Aston Villa right back Eric Lichaj pees chocolate
milk. The US had damned better hope so!

And at center back?

???

He's borrowing from an American football usage, most often heard is
"linebacker corps" as in "The Dallas Cowboys linebacker corps really
likes to play smush mouth football".

Clarence Goodson!

Well, I like him at least. A friend made the point yesterday that if we
hadn't had to burn subs on the Clark/Findley mistakes against Ghana, we
could have brought Goodson in for some height in defense and set-pieces,
which could have helped against an opponent so strong in the air.

Feilhaber, Edu, Bradley, Donovan, Dempsey
Jozy or Buddle or Gomez up top.
Howard in goal. I'll let someone else figure the Defense.

4-5-1, 4-1-4-1, 4-2-3-1, could even be 4-3-3. We had a hole in defense
clot it up and le Donovan and Dempsey go wild on the wings...
