I think that I agree with that completely even if they will never
admit such a thing. Add that some problems specific in each euro
countries (coach, lack of players at x positions, etc.) and voilà

I know, it does not make any sense, no matter how you slice the
allocation of host/defending champion spots, so far as I can tell.

15 in France (including hosts)
14.5 for 2002 (Ireland had to play off vs. Iran), including champs
14 for 2006 (Including hosts, champs no longer automatic qualifiers0
13 for 2010

This is what makes me worried; if FIFA's general approach has been to
raid UEFA for spots when UEFA were doing well,, what will they do now ?

If we take them from UEFA who do we give them to S. America? Do we
really want to see Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, or Peru?

Colombia means a new Shakira video and Shakira in the stands. That's
reason enough IMO. Venezuelan women, judging from the annual Miss World
shows on Italian TV, also smoking hot.

To be fair Equador is not so bad,better to watch than
Switzerland,Australia,New zeland,Slovenia and others.
