Obviously because they could teach italian teams a thing or 2 about catenaccio. It was unbelievable, basically they had one attack action per game and scored from it. Weakest luckiest ugliest team to ever win a serious trophy IMO. A good thing it was just the Euro. > Real always. Franco. Di Stefano. Hugo Sanchez. Yes, well, true they bought their way to glory too, big time. But that team of 2000 and 02 was so good and played so well you could almost forgive them for it. Somehow I can't hate them.

Yes, their football wasn't the most spectacular. ;) But they are a team with limited talents, playing attacking football would have been suicide for them. Instead they did what they could and pulled one upset after another, thanks to their great coach and their huge balls. Them winning the EC is like a second league club winning the cup - it is rare, it is not the result of great football, but it is a great show of balls :) and it has a certain romantic quality (it is possible to beat the big guns after all!). Please don't read too much into me using the words balls and roantic in one sentence. ;) Ciao, SM -- http://www.gourockviews.co.uk I find the whole business of religion profoundly interesting. But also cynical. It was a question in the European Cup in1974 as to who you least wanted to win. Predictably, it revolved around dubious decisions. > > > Greece 2004 > > > Hated is a bit too strong a word but disliked definitely. > > I don't see why. > Greece weren't in the least bit entertaining and played for the counter. Agreed. AC set the tone for the excess that is modern football (tho the real prototype was RM in the 50s). Buy the best players in the world (even if you have to sit some of them on the bench for a while) and pay them shitloads of money. Impress upon them that the only thing that matters is winning. Altogether ironic that this is the team that Benny admires more than any other and in fact got him interested in football in the first place.. |
